The weaving of baskets is as old as the history of man. Traces of baskets were found in the pyramids in Eqypt. As soon as man was able to figure out how to plait or weave fibers together, they began to experiment with structures for woven containers. Some baskets on display in various museums date back as far as 9,000 years. Though made of grasses, pine needles, etc. they are very durable and if cared for properply will last hundreds of years.

Basic types of basket weave patterns can be applied to grasses, trees and other natural fibers. There are many types of weaving techniques; coiling, fiber weaving, split weaving and so on. The baskets on these pages are coiled all made of pine needles. Natural wood, stone, bones, beads, shells, etc. have been incorporated into some of them.

The creation of a basket does not occur within a day, or even a few days. A strong, durable basket can take months to create.
